Cosmetic refresh of a family home in Fulham
Home refresh in Fulham – hallway, kitchen extension, bathrooms, exterior touch-ups
This wasn't a full renovation - the owners in Fulham simply wanted their home to feel fresh again. A busy family home naturally picks up scuffs, wear marks and small signs of life over the years. We were asked to repaint the main hallway, the staircase walls, and the kitchen extension. While we were there, the owners added a few extra jobs: replacing old silicone seals in the bathrooms, fitting new Velux blinds, and touching up the front facade and metal railings outside.

The challenge
The main challenge was the variety of the work - this wasn't just painting. Each job needed different materials and skills. The staircase walls are always tricky because of the height and the awkward angles around the banister. The kitchen extension had water stains from a past minor leak that needed proper sealing before painting. The bathrooms had old, discoloured silicone that had started to peel, and the Velux blinds had to be fitted safely on sloping ceilings. Outside, the metal railings had rust spots, and the front facade had patches where the paint had peeled in the weather.
What we did
Step 1 – Hallway and staircase walls
We started with the hallway and stairwell - the first thing anyone sees when they walk in. These walls had collected scuffs from bags, pushchairs and hands over time. We filled small dents and marks, sanded them smooth, then painted everything in a hardwearing matt finish that can stand up to daily family life. The staircase wall needed careful cutting in around the banister and spindles, and we used an extendable roller for the higher sections.
Step 2 – Kitchen extension
The kitchen extension had a couple of ceiling stains from an old leak (already fixed by a plumber, but the marks remained). We spot-primed those areas with a stain blocker first, then painted the whole extension ceiling fresh white. The walls got two coats of a washable durable paint - kitchens need something you can wipe down when things splatter. We also touched up the window reveals and the door frame leading to the garden.
Step 3 – Bathroom silicone replacement
Not strictly painting, but it made a huge difference. The sealant around the bath and shower trays had gone grey and was peeling away in places - a potential water leak risk. We removed the old silicone completely, cleaned and dried the joints, and applied fresh white sanitary silicone with clean, smooth lines. The bathrooms instantly looked cleaner and more cared for.
Step 4 – Velux blinds installation
The owners had bought blinds for their Velux windows but didn't want to fit them themselves (awkward angles and safety concerns). We installed them properly - drilling into the sloping window frames, securing the brackets firmly, and making sure the blinds opened and closed smoothly. A small job that made a big difference to comfort in the rooms under the roof.
Step 5 – Exterior touch-ups
Outside, we addressed the front facade where paint had flaked off in patches, particularly around the front door and window sills. We scraped loose paint, sanded the edges, spot-primed, and repainted to match the existing colour. The metal railings had rust spots starting to show - we wire-brushed them back to bare metal where needed, applied a rust-inhibiting primer, and gave them a fresh coat of black metal paint. The front of the house instantly looked smarter without needing a full external repaint.
Before and after results
Before our work, the house wasn't in bad shape, but it looked tired. The hallway had a worn-in feel rather than a well-cared-for one. The kitchen extension had those annoying water stains on the ceiling that the owners saw every day. The bathrooms looked clean but the old silicone let them down. After we finished, the house felt fresher, brighter and simply more looked-after. The owners told us it felt like they'd had a mini holiday - coming home to a house that suddenly felt nicer without having to do any of the work themselves.
Why a cosmetic refresh makes sense
Not every project needs to be a full strip-out renovation. Sometimes all a home needs is a skilled pair of hands to go through and tick off all those little jobs that never quite get done. A fresh coat of paint in key areas, new silicone in the bathrooms, a couple of blinds fitted properly, and some exterior touch-ups - it all adds up to a home that feels completely renewed. For homeowners in Fulham, this kind of targeted refresh can add real enjoyment to daily life and help maintain the property's value between bigger projects.
